Google DeepMind Reorganizes as Demis Hassabis Steps Down as CEO
Google DeepMind has moved Demis Hassabis from CEO to Board Chair and Alphabet Chief Scientist, with Koray Kavukcuoglu taking over day-to-day operations.
In early August 2026, Google DeepMind reorganized, moving Demis Hassabis out of the CEO role and into a combined position as Board Chair and Alphabet Chief Scientist. Day-to-day operations now fall to Koray Kavukcuoglu — DeepMind’s former CTO and Alphabet’s chief AI architect — who takes on the role as SVP, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai without holding a separate CEO title himself.
What changed
- Hassabis takes on the titles of Board Chair and Alphabet Chief Scientist, focusing more on AGI (artificial general intelligence) strategy and scientific applications of AI such as drug discovery. He continues to lead the AI drug-discovery subsidiary Isomorphic Labs.
- Kavukcuoglu becomes SVP overseeing DeepMind’s day-to-day operations, including Gemini model development.
- Jeff Dean, DeepMind’s former chief scientist and a 27-year Google veteran, has left along with several colleagues to found a new public-benefit corporation called “Discovery Loop.”
Why the reorganization happened
Google described the change as intended to “speed up AI development while giving Hassabis more time to focus on AGI research.” Reporting suggests the reshuffle is part of a broader shift as Google’s AI organization works to keep pace with OpenAI and Anthropic, with some analysis pointing to morale issues, talent departures, and model-development delays as contributing factors.
